Stapleford Traffic Surveys, November 2024
Concerns were raised about the volume and speed of traffic through the village in the early months of 2024, and after discussion by the parish council, traffic surveys were requested for two locations: the A36 uphill from The Pelican, and the B3083 as it passes the playground. The traffic surveys were carried out by Wiltshire Council, with equipment installed for seven days in early November.
The measure used for traffic surveys is the "85th percentile" - that is, discounting the fastest 15% of vehicles, and taking the speed of the next fastest vehicle. This measure is averaged over the seven days of the survey.
For the A36, where the posted speed limit is 40mph, the 85%ile speed was 42.28mph.
For the B3083, where the posted speed limit is 30mph, the 85%ile speed was 31.02mph. There were roadworks in place nearby for the final day of the survey, but these do not seem to have had a significant effect on traffic speeds.
Data from the surveys can be viewed in detail below - further action will be discussed at the next parish council meeting in January 2025.
Update - January 2025
The results of the traffic surveys were discussed at the parish council meeting on 14/01/25. While any speeding is of concern, the council agreed that at present no further action is justified. Traffic flow through the village will continue to be monitored, and should any residents feel that the matter requires fresh attention, they are requested to make contact with the council via staplefordpcclerk@gmail.com.
